Jesus Varela
Events Manager
With a background in ethnomusicology, Jesus Varela has dedicated much of his career in the advancement of the arts to preserve cultural heritage while also spearheading positive social change. Varela has an extensive history in organizing arts/culture festivals and has served as a resource to local musicians in booking and tour management. In 2009, was instrumental in launching the Remezcla platform in San Francisco. (Remezcla was the first premium digital destination for young, bicultural Latinos. Today, it reaches an audience of 40 million. The brand has become the go-to, on-the-pulse source to discover fresh Latino culture.)
As of late, Varela has been working with projects whose focus is to highlight the unique character of the Latino Cultural District -- he is on the planning committees of Carnaval and the Cesar Chavez Day Parade, and is an active member of the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District. As the former Performing Arts Manager for Accion Latina, Varela was instrumental in the organization and execution of Paseo Artistico -- a collaborative effort between Calle 24 arts organizations, that brings free arts programing to the 24th Street corridor every second Sunday.
Most recently Varela has been working with the Mission Arts and Performance Project to build partnerships with over a dozen public spaces, street corners, bart stations, cafes, bars, taquerias, and homes all over La Mission to transform our common spaces into an orchestrated night of high-quality multi-disciplinary cultural spaces provided for free to the community. M.A.P.P. is dedicated to cultivating, building and defending the culture, history, and character of the Mission District.
