This Thursday, Impact Hub San Francisco hosts Audio Backyard, an alternating showcase of local musicians and vendors that explore Bay Area current affairs through the lens of local creativity.

East Palo Alto music artist Humble Hart The Poet will be featured at this month’s Audio Backyard. She describes her music as “R&B with Hip Hop Flavor & Touches Of Neo-Soul.” Check out her interview below:

What inspires you to create music?
To be honest, my poetry, growing up in the hood, and heartbreak have really inspired me to create my own music. All the R&B, Soul, and Jazz artists that inspired me have written songs that touch souls so I eventually plan to touch souls as well.

Why do you create music?
Music & Poetry have been my outlets since I was young so I create to express myself in a way that feels good to me. Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, and Erykah Badu are the women who just blew my mind when my mom would play them, so they are the main reasons why I create music. I already have Lauryn Hill tattooed, Amy, & Erykah are next.

How does music define your community?
Coming from East Palo Alto, CA music has always been important, it could bring us together even during the worst of times. The generation of 90s kids from my city right now are so talented and I think we’re really gonna bring light to our little 2.5 square mile city.

How would you describe your style of music?
I could never put my Music in a box so it’s always hard for me to describe it, but I’d say it’s like R&B with Hip Hop Flavor & Touches Of Neo-Soul. I have heartbreak songs, uplifting songs, freaky songs like Miguel or Usher and even songs that show my Activism like Lauryn. The style of song that I write always depends on the beat and what I feel when I hear it. My musical style is ever evolving.

What are future plans? Where do you want music to take you?
My future plans include getting my 3 poetry books published, writing, releasing more music and going on a small tour that could eventually become international. I just want to be happy in my heart, mind, soul, & spirit by performing my music and poetry with like-minded individuals.

If you weren’t creating music, what would you be doing?
If I was not creating music I would be finishing up nursing school and working at a hospital or nursing facility. I currently work at a Skilled Nursing Facility & Physical Rehab as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

What’s your favorite album right now?
I’m really into some relatively underground artists. Samaria’s “The Story Of Right Now” and Sy Ari Da Kid’s “B4 The Heartbreak” are what I have in rotation. And of course my Mixtape “Humble Beginnings”
