On the third Thursday of every month Impact Hub San Francisco hosts Audio Backyard, an alternating showcase of local musicians and vendors that explore Bay Area current affairs through the lens of local creativity.

Shaynie Rhoads will be playing at this month’s Audio Backyard. She describes her music as “Rock ‘n’ roll meets bubblegum pop.” Check out her interview below:
What inspires you to create music?
My experiences fuel the music that I write. It’s less about how I feel and more about telling a story. It can be about an event that has shaped the person I am today, or about a person that has had an impact on my life.

Why do you create music?
Music is all I’ve ever known. It’s how I connect with the world around me.
How does music define your community?
I work at a music studio so I’m constantly surrounded by like-minded musicians. We have a good time, but it’s about so much more than what we listen to or what we play. We support each other, we go to each other’s shows, we jam in our free time and share ideas. Music gives us purpose.

“I want to reach out to girls and women of all ages through my music and inspire them to be fearless—not only in their musical endeavors, but in every aspect of their lives.”

How would you describe your style of music?
Rock ‘n’ roll meets bubblegum pop. I take a lot of influence from all kinds of artists, from Megadeth to Britney Spears to Stone Temple Pilots.

What are your future plans? Where do you want music to take you?
I want to reach out to girls and women of all ages through my music and inspire them to be fearless not only in their musical endeavors, but in every aspect of their lives.
If you weren’t creating music, what would you be doing?
I’ve always been an artist of some kind, so if I wasn’t doing music I’d be investing more time in my clothing line, “i love dethkorekitty!” The idea was first conceived when I was in high school, but I only ever made one shirt. I have designs and an entire cast of characters that started out as doodles that could go on shirts, stickers, and skateboards.
What’s you favorite album right now?
My all-time favorite will always be Metallica’s Ride the Lightning, but lately I’ve been really into Bring Me the Horizon’s newest album, That’s the Spirit.
